Proper Training and Implementation: Protecting Employees and Pedestrians, While Limiting Violations

By John Harrington, Controller

test-rockRockledge Scaffold Corp: The Rockledge Scaffold Corporation is a leading provider of pipe scaffolding and sidewalk bridges in the Tri-State area. The company was founded in 1989, and we started working with Pro Safety Services, LLC, a few years later. We first went to them to develop height specific training, and 20 years later Pro Safety is our first call for any safety questions or issues.

The Rockledge Scaffold Challenge: Scaffolding work is a high-risk industry. Our people are working at high heights, that’s the nature of our business. When you are dealing with heights, safety has to be your number one priority…the safety of our employees, as well as the safety of pedestrians and the general public.

When our people are working at heights, it’s critical that they are constantly aware of their surroundings. The challenge for us at Rockledge was that, when we first opened for business, there were not a lot of guidelines and regulations for employees working at heights. So we needed safety professionals working for us who understood our field, and could develop training programs to ensure that our people were cognizant of the risks involved with heights, 100 percent of the time.

The Solution: Pro Safety experts came in and developed customized training programs, specific to heights and scaffolding work. They provided monthly ‘Toolbox Talks’ for our employees, focused on critical elements of their job…such as fall protection, proper use of a harness and working with ladders. In addition, the law mandates that scaffolding workers go through a 32-hour training course every four years, and a 10-hour OSHA course every five years. Pro Safety has certified instructors, who provide this training for us on an ongoing basis.

Over the past 20 years, we have come to rely on Pro Safety for more than just training. They also conduct field audits at most of our sites, making sure that what’s being taught at the ‘Toolbox Talks’ is being implemented in the field by our employees. Any time we have questions or issues regarding safety, we immediately refer them to Pro Safety. They get back to us right away, with the answers we need to keep people safe. This response alleviates our concerns, and puts our minds at ease.

The Result: Safety has always been our number one priority at Rockledge. With the help of the team at Pro Safety, we were doing training long before it was mandated by law. Today, with more regulations, so many different agencies and stricter enforcement, we need Pro Safety more than ever. We rely on their consultants to be up to date on the latest industry regulations and guidelines, and provide the training we need to limit our exposure to citations and violations.

As a result, our insurance rates have decreased. Our strong safety record also helps us with new business, as these companies like to see that we are taking the necessary steps to keep our workers safe. This can only happen if safety is your first priority, and Pro Safety has helped us to create a safety culture.

Thanks to Pro Safety, we have an even greater emphasis on safety. The fact that Pro Safety has been with us for over 20 years tells our people that we are serious about safety, and they are very clear about what we expect from each of them. At the end of the day, when you work with heights, we have to make sure that our employees and the general public are always kept safe.
